1 Baking tray
1 Parchment paper
1 Small mixing bowl
1 Whisk or fork
1 Sharp bread knife
1 Spoon
- 1 fresh Serbian lepinja flatbread
- 3 tbsp kajmak
- 1 large egg
- 2 –3 tablespoons warm pretop roasted lamb or pork drippings
- Plain yogurt or sour milk for serving (optional)
Preheat your oven to 430°F (220°C).
Slice the lepinja horizontally through the middle, leaving one edge attached if possible.
Gently remove a small amount of the soft interior to create space for the filling.
In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and kajmak until smooth and creamy.
Spread the mixture evenly inside the bread.
Warm the pretop slightly, then pour it evenly over the filling so it soaks into the bread.
Place the filled lepinja on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
Bake for 8–10 minutes, or until the egg is set and the bread is lightly golden and crisp around the edges.
Serve immediately with plain yogurt or sour milk for the authentic Serbian experience.
- Freshly baked lepinja produces the most authentic texture.
- Homemade or high-quality kajmak makes a noticeable difference in flavor.
- If pretop isn't available, melted butter can be substituted, although the taste will be less traditional.
- Do not overbake, or the filling may become dry.
- Komplet Lepinja is best enjoyed immediately while hot and creamy.
